Winemaker Kris Kato Notes

On the 350-acre Paso Creek vineyard east of Paso Robles, the soils are poor and the temperature swings are extreme. But Merlot vines love it. And for those with the fortitude to farm it, the rewards are boundless, as our 2006 Merlot proudly proclaims.
While 2006 may have been a fairly typical growing season, the flavors in this Merlot are anything but ordinary. The brutally hot days and bone-chilling nights kept the berries small with fierce intensity. And so the palate-popping dark fruit flavors dominate. But the wine finishes with a finesse befitting Merlots of far fancier pedigree. It's the kind of bold character that simply can't be rushed.
