Winemaker Layne Montgomery Notes
This wine was grown in what we consider to be one of the finest Zinfandel vineyards in California. The vines were planted in 1916, making this a truly "Old Vine" wine. The vineyard is owned and managed by fifth-generation Lodi native Kevin Soucie; the vines were planted by his grandfather, Edward Soucie. 95% of the vines are the original planting. It is a rare thing for a vineyard to reach one hundred years of age. With this wine we celebrate the fruit of the vine, the heritage of the land and the Soucie family who have nutured this ground since 1916. Soucie Vineyard is the western-most Zinfandel vineyard of merit in the Mokelumne River AVA, situated less than 15 miles from salt water and the upper reaches of the great San Francisco Bay. ...more... The famous “Delta Breeze” impacts first and best at this vineyard site; diurnal temperature swings of 60 degrees are not uncommon. The vineyard site is flat. The soil is classified as DeVries Sandy Loam, consisting of material from alluvial flood plains and ancient river beds. The dirt is as fine as talcum powder and sparkles like diamonds after a rain. The vines are self-rooted (not grafted,) head-trained (self-supporting) and are irrigated only as needed via an underground drip system. We consider this to be a classic style of Lodi Zinfandel; the fruit of the vineyard is the emphasis here. A wonderful balance of fruit, oak, acidity and tannins come together beautifully creating a deep core of dense fruit surrounded with a velvet plushness accented with fine tannins and gorgeous American oak, all wrapped with more soaring notes of red and black fruit flavors leading to a long, lingering, and satisfying finish.
