Winemaker Remi Zajac Notes

2017 Mendocino Fair Wine Competition: Double Gold and Best of Class
A full-flavored Rhone-style red, this Petite Sirah wine needs to unfold in the glass where deep hues of purple and red reflect the density of the wine. The nose reveals alluring, sexy violet and red fruit flavors that awaken the senses. Black current and blueberries dominate the palate, with back notes of white and black pepper and cardamom. The bright acidity balances a soft presence of the tannins. This wine can be bottle-aged for many years, if you can resist drinking it right away!
Growing Season: The beginning of 2015 brought spring-like daytime temperatures, but the temperatures cooled down in March and April as the fruit slowly set over three weeks. May warm ...more... ed up the vineyard and we got several heat waves in June, July, and August. We had minimal rain throughout the season. Because we grow our own grapes, we made the best farming decisions to obtain the most beautiful fruit under these hot and dry conditions. Harvest took place in September 2015 with much smaller yields than usual, but the quality of the fruit was exceptional.
Winemaking: We timed the harvest to obtain the best balance of flavors in the wine. The fruit was picked and delivered to the winery in the cool early hours of the day, hand-sorted, and fermented at low temperatures to develop further the fruit characters of the grape. The wine was then aged in neutral barrels for 10 months prior to bottling. Our winemaking philosophy is to enhance the terroir and varietal characters by using traditional and natural winemaking techniques. Our low production volume allows us to track and nurture each barrel of wine. We didn't add sulfites or other preservative in this wine.
Vineyard: In a 10 acres vineyard located on the edge of a plateau above Mendocino Lake, we are growing Petite Sirah, the famed Black Grape of Mendocino. Petite Sirah is ideally suited to the local Mediterranean weather, and to one of the best vineyard soils in Mendocino county. The rich red color of the clay soil, a redvine sandy clay loam, is the signature of the vineyard. This exceptional terroir produces a complex and intense palette of fruity flavors balanced by intriguing spice characters. The vineyard is biodynamically farmed since 2013, and received the CCOF organic certification in 2015.
