Winemaker Robert Smerling Notes

Robert smerling has been making wines in California for 27 years. He founded and operated Renwood Winery for 19 years and then started Cabana Winery in Sacramento. As an urban winery Robert sources grapes from great vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Lodi and Amador. The botique winery produces 6000 cases of hand crafted wines. " I wanted to get away from large scale production and return to the true craft of artisian winemaking".
Harvest was perfect, we started at 5 am, the brix were 25 and the air was cool and were able to get out of the vineyard at 7 and back to the winery before 8:30.
We cold soaked the grapes in macro bins for a day and then started ferminatation. It was smooth and the wines went dry. ML gave us a perfect bone dry finish. ...more... The barrels were from from France, medium toast. We racked the wines 3 times over 20 months and it was very clean, but we gently filtered the wine before bottling.
The wine is big and has good stong tannins. We bottled aged the wine 6 months before release. Lots of dark berry fruit, nice hint of oaks, smooth tannis. The noise picks up scents of dark chocolate and cedar. This is a wine that can be laid down for a decade and only get better. But with 2 double gold medals we think you can enjoy the wine now.
