Parducci and the Magic of Mendocino
It's always simple to associate great wines with Sonoma, Napa and other famous wine grape growing regions, but some truly amazing regions are overlooked. Such is the case for the Mendocino AVA, which includes smaller AVAs such as Anderson Valley, Yorkville Highlands, McDowell Valley, Potter Valley, Redwood Valley and Cole Ranch, America's smallest AVA! These AVAs are diverse and as a direct result, so are the wines. Parducci, a leader in Mendocino for more than eighty years, is tradition-based on an uncompromising focus on quality: quality vineyards, quality wines, quality people, and the quality of life that comes from caring deeply about what you do, and where and how you live.

The Parducci family came from Tuscany and created one of California's first great wineries in 1932. For many decades the family drove constantly forward, finding great vineyard sites throughout California's legendary North Coast, and using those grapes to make memorable wines that always stood out from the growing crowd of followers.

And while they did that, they won national and international acclaim for their remarkable approach to the land they loved. Building on the traditional holistic approach of their native Tuscany, they grew grapes and created a winery in harmony with the land. They sought out the unique micro-climates of Mendocino, and crafted those grapes into wines that fully expressed the varietal character of the grapes and the distinctive notes of each vineyard. It was a gentle approach - the winemaker's touch was always subtle - and it drove them to break new ground in many ways. In 2012 John Parducci was inducted in the California Vintners Hall of Fame for his leadership, integrity, and influence on the world of California wine.

As stewards of the Parducci legacy, the Thornhill family has continued to operate the oldest winery in Mendocino County in the very best traditions of John Parducci. For the past fifteen years, winemaker Bob Swain has won recognition as one of the best winemakers not only in Mendocino County, but in all of California. His painstakingly crafted wines are perfect expressions of the fruit from these spectacular vineyards: lively and balanced, elegant and focused. They have won more awards than Bob can count, although he does enjoy sharing them with his next door neighbor, 95-year-old John Parducci.

But these wines are only a part of the story. The winery continues to win awards. Tim Thornhill's revolutionary water conservation work has raised the standard for the rest of the industry, and the winery (the first in the USA to be certified carbon-neutral) has been recognized by many authorities for its minimal impact on the environment. Perhaps most importantly, the people of Parducci continue to be the true strength of the winery. With the new fifteen-acre company farm, the winery itself now produces organically grown fruits and vegetables that are shared with the employees on a weekly basis, ensuring that they have not only healthy food on their tables, but a greater understanding the commitment the winery makes to their lives and their families.
