Winemaker George Bursick Notes
The Vineyards
The 2001 growing season started out early, slowed in the late spring with bloom later than average. The light influence of fog during the summer allowed the vines to catch up and ripen early. Overall there was an average yield for grapes giving a great balance to the flavors and aromas.

Winemaking
All grapes at J are hand-harvested into 40 pound bins. The grapes are whole cluster pressed in our unique Coquard Champagne press for what many consider an unmatched gentle press. Grape juice from the various vineyard lots is fermented and kept separately until blending decisions are made in mid-November. The cuvée (blend) was assembled in December of 2001, cold stabilized and then bottled over the spring of 2002 ...more... .

Aging
After the secondary fermentation occurred in the bottle, the wines aged for nearly five years in our cool cellars. For this extended tirage bottling, the wine was left to age sur lie for an additional year for added richness, texture and flavor. In 2008 we began riddling the wines to remove the yeast sediment responsible for the aging character and a dosage liqueur was prepared from a blend of wood-aged, reserve wines and pure cane sugar. After the wine was disgorged, it was aged for at least another six months before being released to ensure a perfect balance of flavors.

Tasting Notes
The 2001 J Brut extended tirage bottling has aromas of bright citrus, Bosc pear and light honeysuckle, along with more noticeable yeast tones of brioche. Slight nutty and toasty characters join in, lending a nice balance to the fruit. Pear and citrus notes continue through on the palate, joined by hints of gingersnap. Complex toasty aromas and flavors balance beautifully with a long and lingering citrus finish. Firm structure and creamy qualities of this wine make it a wonderful apéritif as well as a good pairing for richer dishes.
