Winemaker Dave Archinal Notes
Leucadia Red 2010 Sonoma County Chardonnay The fruit for our 2010 Chardonnay was hand-harvested and sorted from smaller vineyards within both the Russian River and the Sonoma Coast growing regions. The distinctions of these two great Chardonnay growing regions provides the perfect complementing fruit balance. Warm days and cool nights of the Russian River region provide the depth of fruit while the cooler growing conditions of the Sonoma Coast add complexity and bright acidity. The unusually cool 2010 growing season allowed us to harvest well into mid October. We love the character of this wine as it showcases exceptional balance and is beautifully suited for pairing with great food. Enjoy with creamy pasta dishes, baked Chicke ...more... n and anything from the sea, especially lobster! Vineyard Notes: Smaller vineyards growing a range of Clone 4 Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley and Dijon Clone 95 from the Sonoma Coast. Our 2010 offering was styled from 62% Russian River and 38% Sonoma Coast fruit. Varietal Makeup: 100 % Chardonnay Vintage Notes: The 2010 growing season was a challenge, as the cool weather of Spring continued thru an unusually cool Summer. However, our long awaited and needed Indian Summer appeared by late September and pushed ripeness levels to full development. The cool weather provided extended hang time and gave us wonderful complexity at lower brix and subsequent alcohol levels. Fermentation and Aging: Fruit was picked in the cool early morning hours to maintain varietal freshness and was gently pressed and put to barrel for fermentation. A combination of partial malolactic fermentation (60%) and sur lees barrel aging resulted in a rich but delicate texture and is well balanced by the bright natural acids. The wine was fermented and aged in 30% new French Oak with the balance being done in neutral oak where it remained on the lees for 10 months in order to develop richness and complexity. Tasting Notes: Our 2010 Chardonnay is as true wine lover delight. Its aromatics are highlighted by a diverse range of fresh Gravenstein apple with Meyer lemon. The lighter toast and spice components brought about by the judicious use of new French Oak have added inviting complexity and depth to both the aromatics and the palate while keeping this wine bright and fresh. The fruit profile on the palate combines fresh green apple and ripe pear along with the Meyer lemon component seen in the aromatics. The finish is precise with bright acidity cleansing the palate and making this an ideal food wine. This wine will age well in bottle thru 2013 as it adds further depth and complexity.
