The General 2010 California Red Wine WINNER: GOLD MEDAL, FIRST EVER RHONE SHOOTOUT - 2010 California Red Wine Rhone Blend A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this wine will be donated to organizations that support U.S. Troops. The rugged terrain of Northern California is ideally suited for growing a diverse range of red varietals and our 2010 is exactly that; uniquely diverse! We’ve combined the fruit of three great growing regions; Sonoma County, Mendocino County and Lake County. The warmer daytime inland temperature of these regions is reduced dramatically at night as the cold maritime breezes of the Pacific work their way up the rivers and valleys from the coast. We wanted lush and delicious to be the story o ...more... f our 2010 General, and blending Syrah, Zinfandel, Tempranillo, and Muscat ( yes, a white wine!) achieves our goal dramatically. Well-developed Syrah from Lake County, great Sonoma County Zin, and hard to find Tempranillo from Mendocino creates a complex fruit profile that while big and rich, carries itself with great posture and structure. The fruit was hand picked in the early morning hours and entered the winery in a cold state where it was sorted prior to de-stemming. An extended cold soak of 5 days on average combined with twice daily punch-downs were performed in order to achieve full extraction and a complex flavour profile. A light pressing was followed by twelve months in new and used French Oak prior to bottling in Fall of 2011. Fragrant aromas of lush black cherry and lively black raspberry combine with spice, cola notes and a hint of vanilla. Lush black fruit flavors and soft tannins are balanced by the wine’s balancing acid levels which keeps the wine alive on the palate. This wine is an ideal food wine for a wide range of foods including pasta with red sauce, juicy burgers, grilled steaks and red meats and of course, great BBQ.
