| C.G. Di Arie Vineyards & Winery - Simply Amazing! |
There are a lot of great wineries out there. Having visited so many in the last five years, I know this to be true. Once in a while, I am graced with individuals of both greatness and humility. Chaim Gur-Arieh, Ph. D., is one of those folks.
From truly humble beginnings in Istanbul, Turkey, Chaim (his name means 'life' in Hebrew) moved to Israel as a teenager. After completing his mandatory military obligation, he studied at Technion, Israel's Institute of Technology, where he received his B.S in Chemical Engineering. From there, he moved to the United States acquiring both his Master and Ph. D. degrees in Food Science with minors in Biochemistry and Chemical Engineering.
He then spent 7 years at Quaker Oats and was involved in the creation of foods, including Cap'n Crunch. He then moved to California to becoming the Director of New Products for Del Monte Corporation, where again Chaim blazed the trail and came up with and Pudding Cups and many more new products.
Chaim's story of love is a precious one that starts in 1971. While playing the accordion at a party, he captured the glance of a young professional artist and ballet dancer, Elisheva. Having been born in Haifa, Israel and lived near the Sea of Galilee, was great common ground. At 13, her family had immigrated to San Francisco, where following her career in Fine Arts was achievable and she danced for the Oakland Ballet at the age of 20. She became a truly accomplished painter and has her works displayed across the United States. The rest is a beautiful history of two people working with great respect and admiration for one another.
In 1974, he wed his beloved Elisheva. In the same year, Chaim created the Food Development Corporation, where he developed numerous new products including Hidden Valley Ranch Salad Dressing, Power Bars and Wine Coolers. In 1980, Chaim merged Food Development Corporation with California Brands Flavors, his newly created flavor company. Over the next 18 years Chaim transformed California Brands Flavors into a major West Coast flavor company. |

Their joint dream was to own a winery. Chaim is blessed in that his wife gave him the passion for making wine. She manages the brand image, winery events, and marketing aspects. The logo she created is quite interesting as well, as it represents two lions, with tails entwined with an ancient olive press in between. The significance here is that the last name Gur-Arieh mean 'lion's cub' in ancient Hebrew.
Once again, Chaim continued creating new things, including the development of a new Dual Compartment Submerged Cap Fermentation Tank , which he uses to craft his very own special wines.
WIth Chaim and Elisheva's background, I believe they have created the true art of making wine at their winery and orchards in Mount Aukum, California in Gold Rush country. With Chaim as an insatiable inventor, it's all about the creation of something special, much like his relationship with Elisheva!
