Profile on EOS Estate, Paso Robles and Petite Sirah!
I have to say I have been coming here for a number of years. Watching them grow, new buildings, expanding wine collection, a tremendous tasting room staff, and best of all, great wine. All straight off the long (watch your speed!) stretch of Highway 46. You have to take notice that the facility makes great use of solar tiles in helping do its part to be green here. 100% solar power!

As a wine lover, I have a special spot for Petite Sirah or Durif, as it is one the darkest and most tannic of grapes, yet when crafted well, it’s an attraction like dark chocolate. Important to note is that Petite Sirah is not related to Syrah (or Australian take of Shiraz). In my search for the perfect Petite Sirah, only a handful of names come to mind. EOS, is one other, as they have four, count ’em, four different ones.

First up is Lost Angel, the most economical ($14), yet quite enjoyable with nice fruit. Next up is the Estate Petite Sirah at a respectable $18, with slightly stronger tannins. Rounding third (are we playing baseball here?) is the Private Reserve Petite Sirah. This one got my attention, especially at $25! The forward fruit, aroma, finish and complexity sold me on this one. Batting cleanup in a funkier large bottom bottle, is the Cupa Grandis, the grand-daddy of them all. At $60, it boast fantastic fruit and firm tannins. I would let this one sit for a bit, but would not wait to put it in the cellar immediately. Also, there’s 20% off if you belong to their wine club!

Other noteworthy Petite Sirah wineries include Ray Coursen’s Elyse in Napa, Patrick Davies at Eagle Castle out of Paso, Eric Stine of Langtry/Guenoc in Lake County and Stag’s Leap Winery in Napa.
